Gortnalamph

The McDermott’s were considered farmers and lived in a small townland called Gortnalamph in County Leitrim, Ireland (see link Gortnalamph in menu).
The greater civil place name for Gortnalmaph is the Mohill Civil Parish in the Drumard district. The province is called Connaught.
The average number of households in their town were 16 with a population under 100 persons.

According to the census in 1901 and 1911 the McDermott home in Gortalamph at that time had walls of stone, brick or concrete with a thatch, wood or other perishable material roof. The home had three rooms with 3 windows in the front of the house.

It is unknown if the walls were the same during the time Bessie was living there.  Mud was another material used during those times for walls.

The family belonged to the Bornacoola Roman Catholic Parish comprising of several townlands including Knockadrinan which was the location of the main parish church. A chapel in the townland of Clonturk (Cloonturk) was closest to Gortnalamph. Their parish was part of the Ardagh Catholic Diocese. According to historians this Diocese was founded by St. Patrick or his disciple St. Mell.

Despite all the prejudices, the allegiance to Catholicism was strong throughout Ireland. The McDermott and Murray families remained Catholic as exemplified by the documentation of their children’s baptisms at their Bornacoola Roman Catholic parish.

Murray Musings shared by Lizzie Byrne from Ireland:

☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️

Lizzie Byrne is related to us through the Murray line (Thomas Murray and Elizabeth Lenihan). She is an avid researcher and story teller, sharing oral history:

"A lot of the stories have been handed down through many generations and may have lost (or gained) detail.   We have a saying here... Don't let the truth get in the way of a good story.   Of course you can share our stories as long as no-one takes it verbatim.. "

On Nell Murray:

When Tom's wife Anna Maria died, my Grandmother Nell  age 9 took over the running of the house until their Aunt Elizabeth came back from America to help out.
She worked for the Bell Telephone Company.

On Eliza, Margaret, and Ellen Murray :

Thomas Murray and Elizabeth Lenihan had triplet girls.... This was most unusual... The girls were hidden away from Lord Leitrim, who would have paid particular interest to them. Margaret died young.  She ate Night Shade. A deadly Berry from a hedge on the Killamaun Lane.

On Sr. Perpetua (Jane Murray):

The story goes that during the IRA/RIC conflicts Jane was witness to some young men knocking out the telegraph communication wires and because she would have to testify against them it was decided, for her and the family's safety she was sent away with the nuns to Conneticut. Where she took the veil and became Sister Perpetua....
What a time that was back then!

Liz has shared these wonderful photos! (I slightly restored and marked her identifications.) -emp :
